summary: Roin managed to hurt herself somehow and was lucky Eli was close to finishing her shift at the precinct when she did. xD
timing: early evening, after several hours at hospital.

"I still cannot, for the life of me, work out how you bloody did it."

She'd said it several times over now, all in various and different ways, since bringing her once oppo-turned-friend-turned-business-venture-partner to the Emergency Department. Because she had spent at least half of those hours, and the fifteen minutes it had taken her to pack up and race to the shop [a record time for 3pm in Los Angeles, at that, but she'd been panicked by the lack of information and the whole lot of blood mentioned over the phone], trying to work out just how Roin had managed to open up her calf.

Sure, the first bit she'd gotten -- belt loop stuck on something or other...open door, maybe. But the part where she'd cut her leg open on top of her ruining her pants? Maybe the current case she was on was tiring her, but Eli's Detective brain was not coming up with credible answers. Might have more luck if she got to poke around where the accident had taken place, but that had been the last thing on her mind when she had seen the blood. She'd rated that issue as a mite more important -- sarcasm intended -- and...well, apparently calves bled a lot. One thing Hollywood had gotten right with it's sword fights in films.

Oh well. It hadn't been as terrible as they'd feared, in the end. Not even an overnight stay. They'd taken Roin in, and she'd come back...hobbling and stitched up, a little pale, but miraculously looking less like shit than one might have feared.

"You still look a bit crappy." And Eli herself, though she offered her arm, hadn't eaten since breakfast this morning, and dinner had definitely been off the cards while waiting in the blasted E.D. "We'll get something on the way. I'm craving pancakes." Hint, hint, nudge, nudge, punch in the face.

Roin gave a snort at Eli's phrasing, repeating "bloody" with an amused tone.

"Yeah, well, I might look bad but I feel pretty darn good. Can't remember exactly what they gave me, but it's working and pancakes sound amazing--NO WAIT!," Roin's hand came out abruptly, clumsily slap/grasping Eli's arm before speaking in a dramatic stage whisper, eyes wide,"Waffles! We should get waffles. Or I should get waffles. There's a Waffle House near here, right? Wait, where are we?"

To say the least, Roin was not exactly feeling any pain from the now-stitched gash in her leg, or if she was it was far from any concern in her drug-addled brain. Not that she'd received very much of the opioid.

Oh God.

"You're still as useless as ever on pain relief," Eli said tartly at the giggled repetition of her words, if with something of a groan in her voice. Then she was being man-handled, and the female Detective was almost comical in the way she tensed at the treatment.

Common sense reasserted itself thankfully, if with the help of what appeared to be an increasingly hysterical mechanic, and the tall blonde woman managed to grab a hold of her high as a kite harasser friend, forcing her with something not unlike the tight grip perps were given when being escorted to police cell to return to Eli's side. Roin wasn't all that likely to feel it or bother with it all that much anyway, given whatever the hell it was coursing through her system [and in the plastic bag Eli was grasping in her hand, long giving up on tucking it into her handbag] had her forgetting she had a busted up leg, and once the smaller woman was back where she was easier to deal with, Eli tucked her arm back through hers.

"Pancake on the Rocks has waffles, you muppet. Remember? Either way, anything will do you good after this -- they should have given you something to eat once they knew you weren't dying." The last bit was added with a grumble, Eli guiding Roin into the hospital lift and shifting them both so she could find the button to the underground car park.

"Is there money in your wallet? Wait, never mind -- you can pay me back another time. Tomorrow even -- you're staying with me tonight. We'll pick up Bubbles on the way. But I *was* having someone over tonight, so no blabbing on about it, or I'll kick your ass."

"OOoooo~" Roin teased at the mention of having someone over, moving to bump Eli with her shoulder but ending up just being a bit of a bumping stumble instead, "Your booooy?"

She snickered, apparently having quite a bit of fun on whatever they had given her. It was hard to imagine the woman that could hold her liquor with the best of them would be brought so low with a simple, one-time injection opioid. When Eli got the chance to look at the prescription without being jostled or weighed down by her wobbly friend, she would be glad to find that it wasn't quite the same as what Roin had recently received. Though, how she'd act on that one was anyone's guess.

"He's not *my* boy," Eli snapped, a little more testily than she'd intended. Though thankfully, Roin was likely too out of it to notice, or more, what that might mean...or rather, be a warning sign of where her former shipmate's head space was regarding her current place in the dating status quo with said current man lucky enough to be filling that space, and the very real risk it posed for those involved with her when she began to get like this.

But thank God, Roin was high as a kite, and so it wasn't something Eli [if she was even consciously aware of it] was too concerned would come up for the next day at least...or ever.

"Come in, in the car, meathead. Down you go, into the seat, there. We'll get your dog first, then you're staying in the car while I get dinner. No deals, no arguments."

Roin giggled at Eli's retort, but said no more on the matter, the detective's assumptions about the matter flying out the window once she was distracted apparently correct.

The mechanic wobbled and swayed a bit as she was guided into her seat, having to be buckled in since her fingers couldn't quite work the blasted contraption.

She gave a pout, however, when she was ordered to stay in the car while Eli retrieved the breakfast-food-dinner, rolling her eyes and somehow managing to scoff out a raspberry.

setting: An hour or so later, after getting dinner, Bubbles, spare clothes for Roin and driving AROUND Downtown to avoid traffic.

It was with the deepest of sighs that Eli closed the front door, the kind of sigh that only came with the relief of coming home after a very long day. Of course, she wasn't left to her blessed self, but as far as an invasion of her quiet time went, there was far worse for her than one of her best [and oldest, now she thought about it] friends and her dog -- even if said friend was half off her rocker. And the cause of said long day being lengthened into very long. It couldn't be helped, either way; she knew full well that as far as family went, Roin had none in Los Angeles whatsoever. So, Eli had figured, it made sense that it would fall to her to keep her from killing herself...keep her from doing so being the key word. The attempt had already been made.

Ah well, though. Forged through fire and all, right? The thought made Eli snort softly as she dropped her keys on to the counter, but it was all done with a half-smile as she made her way to the tiny linen cupboard, pulling out an extra blanket, pillow and towel and not doubting for a moment that the crackers brunette would make herself comfortable quite easily on the couch without needing invitation.

"Probably leave the shower for tomorrow, when you're a bit better. Or we'll be back in the E.D. before midnight. Just have to wash your face after dinner or something and be happy with that."

The towel was left on the edge of the counter, the blankets and pillow draped over the back of the couch, before the blonde Detective made her weary way to the cupboards housing dog food. Thankfully, Bubbles wasn't quite as in need of the kind of 'food-watching' that Riddick was -- biscuits would do the stocky little dog fine, she knew. Still, Eli couldn't help herself [never could when it came to dogs], and once she'd procured a spare dog bowl in the form of an old plastic salad bowl she wasn't likely to use again [the sound bringing Riddick from his concerned perusal of Roin over by the couch], Bubble was treated to only the slightly smaller equivalent to what was Riddick's evening meal of biscuits and soft food, and defrosted chicken necks on the side for good, happy teeth.

Spoiled puppies, she thought affectionately as she placed Riddick's near the window and the bowl for Bubbles nearer the door, tousling Riddick's neck as he trotted primly past, before hoofing his way into his meal. That done, their own food [or what Roin hadn't been allowed in the car, to make up some for the drugs going to her head] was finally free to be hoofed into in the same manner, and another deep sigh that scattered blonde bangs escaped Eli as she sunk down on the floor beside the couch, balancing her own plate on her lap.

"Would you rather the bed? Or are you comfortable there?"

"Awwe! Puppy! Come back!" Roin pouted when Riddick wandered off in pursuit of food. In her pouting, the mechanic grabbed the throw blanket from some area of the couch, clumsily unfolding it and wrapping it over her head and shoulders like a babushka. The pouting quickly dissipated into a snort of laughter as she caught sight of what she looked like in the dark t.v. screen, and was soon in giggles over it.

When Eli came to sit next to the couch, Roin wiggled her way up, then slid off the couch to sit on the floor next to her. However, this was hardly accomplished with grace, and she winced and grunted in pain as the jolt sent a twinge through the wound in her leg. It only took her a moment to recover, and she was soon wedging her head (still covered in the blanket) under her friend's arm and into her lap. " 'm fine right here," she said, turning to give Eli an adorable, nose-krinkled, shit-eating grin.

“Food. Over there.”

She was adorable, yes. Always, and Eli would never not wish the best for the oddity that was her friend of her bygone days in the military. That was the thing with that kind of friend – so often, more than not, was it a bond forged through fire, and all the stronger for it. It was…something one could go on about, try to explain, but at the end of the day, there was no way to explain that kind of bond to someone who had not experienced life as it could be like, and the…mateship, the Australians had called it when she’d been foreign loan posted to the Warramunga – in the fire and blood that was often the lifestyle they’d once kept. The closest Eli had ever come to anyone who did get it outside was, in fact, in the job she had now. Cops, fire fighters; they figured it out quick enough in the end.

But still, bond or not, she was *not* eating with a lapful of person. Certainly not a lapful of person who was, even when fully sober, rather close to shameless on her good days. A precious nuisance, but God help her could Roin be a nuisance when she chose nonetheless.

“Roin, come on. I’m tired. And that hurt just now, didn’t it.” Statement, not question, and just a tad dry. “You can even choose what we watch.”

Roin's happy haze lingered for a moment, clearly comfortable where she was, until the mention of what to watch came up. The mechanic perked, jerking as if to sit up, but then remembering oh right food on lap, and instead wiggled her way back out from under Eli's arm, turned onto hands and knees (or, rather, hands and knee, since she was now favoring her other leg), and bobbled over to the DVD selection.

A finger ran over the spines a moment before she landed on the one she wanted, popped it open, and placed it into the player. While it started up, she stood and went to get the rest of her food. Of course, in her wibbly state, she had forgotten to turn on the TV.

When Eli managed to get that powered up, the title screen for Willow greeted her.

**A Bit Later**

Despite her best attempts to stay awake, not all of the years long self discipline could keep Detective Torreto awake in the end. It was a fair call though, that she would take sleep as soon as she came even a smidgen close to the opportunity; she'd probably had nothing more than eight hours sleep in two days, between her newest case [the base file of it tucked neatly into her bedside drawer, though the picture of the young, disabled male victim lay on top of the drawer] distracting her wholly as they always did, getting Brax on short notice to Kindergarten this morning as she'd had to, and now driving around and looking after her best friend.

She'd woken briefly from her place against the couch to realise the film she'd groaned at earlier had changed to what looked like an episode of [her highly illegal, torrented] Cold Case, but not even the prospect of her favorite show could keep her up, and after ascertaining that Roin hadn't killed herself getting up to change the DVD's out, she'd slipped back into her nap, with two sets of dog nose in her lap.

...well, Riddick's nose was resting on her lap. Bubbles was sprawled width-ways over her shins.

Both dogs woke though when there was a knock on the door, and so did Eli, startling out of the brink of deeper sleep and barely avoiding knocking the remnants of Roin's dinner flying.

"The fu--damn it." She groaned softly, rubbing her face and glancing at her friend with a somewhat irritated sleepiness.

"There's not meant to be anyone over but you, I swear. Stay put--Bubbles, shut--*both* of you shut it."

Eli then got to her feet, stomping her left foot to get the pins and needles out *and* scare the dogs away from the door. She ran a hand through sleep-tousled and thus now rather shaggy blonde locks, before deciding she didn't give a damn either way if her uninvited visitor got a fright at her appearance and opening the door.

And promptly slipping through the gap upon registering who her new company was, pulling the heavy wooden frame behind her so only a crack was between them and the inside of her apartment. God, please let whatever episode of Cold Case is on be utterly enrapturing.

"What are you doing here?"

It came out as a hiss, rather harsher than she'd intended. But she was only just awake, and certainly not rested -- the circles darkening to bluish-gold against olive skin under her eyes were testament to that, if nothing else. Thus, she was significantly less on her game than usual, and most definitely not up to taking the edge off anything.

"I thought I wasn't seeing you until Thursday."

"Bubbles!" Roin drawled as Eli got up to get the door, "Inside Voice!" At the command, the bouncy boxer lowered her barking to a quiet whuff, each one puffing out her jowls. Though that didn't stop her from trying to follow the detective out the door, little nubbin whipping furiously back and forth in the excitement of possibly meeting a Person. The wet, black nose even pressed against the crack Eli had left, snuffling and whuffing and trying to get through until Roin gave the command to leave them alone.

Jack, meanwhile, was baffled. Usually, when the door opened, Eli would let him in, or at least just stand there with it open. Being shuffled out into the hallway was more than a bit of a surprise.

The confused expression strengthened for a moment with Eli's observation about Thursday, then softened into a lightly adoring smile. "It is Thursday."

"What."

The singular, remarkably intelligent response was all that could be mustered up as Eli stared at him. She blinked hard several times, as if doing so would at least make the whole situation go away once comprehended, if not make sense of it.

After several long moments, however, of staring between his face [her tired body apparently still more in sync than her brain, as her cheeks coloured very lightly at the look in those warm brown eyes] and the bag he was holding, the light of realisation dawned on those worn out features, and there was a rather distinct thunk that pushed the door open just a tiny bit more when the back of the Detective's head met her front door rather...painfully, really, by the looks of it.

"Fuck."

There was a light chuckle from Jack, and the smile grew just a little bit wider.

The poor thing. He had been a little miffed that she hadn't even bothered to contact him about not being able to show up at the cafe, about waiting there for two hours after their appointed time to hear from her, even though he knew well she was on a difficult case and was more than likely stressed beyond being able to be in any sort of proper social interaction. Now, however, any irritation he'd had had fluttered away. She wasn't just stressed, she was utterly exhausted.

Though, he did wonder who on earth was in her apartment with her.

"Lizardbreath!" Came the lightly chiding voice of an intoxicated Roin from the other side of the door, "I know you're fucking him, so just let him in, already! ...Besides, doors don't make for good fucking supports. Trust me, I know."

Jack lifted a brow.

Eli groaned. It was all she could do in response, that and cover up her now obviously red face, doing so for a moment before dragging her fingers wearily down the contours of her cheek bones.

"You know what, you may as well come in," she whispered raspily, "You have alcohol and someone's going to have to stop me killing her before dawn."

Because as much as she loved Roin most days, there were others where she wanted to kill her. The girl-woman was a wonderful person, but she could also be horribly insensitive at times, if by accident, and one of those times was almost now. Eli wasn't normally so sensitive, but she was tired, troubled, and sore, and the worst bit was repressing it all because of course, poor Roin had no idea -- not in the state she was in.

Thus, Eli grabbed for the thick wrist attached to the hand holding the beloved, precious elixir of life [aka vodka], pushing the door open with a weary slap of her palm and an irritable nudge of her knee to keep overly curious dogs from getting in the way [though Riddick was good for staying where he was, merely offering a low 'roof' when he saw Jack]. That done, the door was closed and the hand she was holding let go, though not without taking the paper bag it was holding with her as she made her way gingerly to the kitchen counter.

"You can reintroduce yourselves. She was stupid and did a stupid thing, so she's here, Jack."

Bubbles bounced gleefully when the two finally came inside, whimpering and whuffing excitedly as she tried her best not to jump up on the new Person that had joined them since she knew from many a scolding that People generally disliked that.

Roin, meanwhile, was grinning like an idiot (almost like she was proud of the stupid thing she'd done), and waving at Jack.

Jack frowned slightly as he studied the hazy look and bandaged leg, even as he crouched down to say hello to the bouncing Bubbles, who happily reared up to place her forepaws on his shoulders and give him a great, slobbery kiss to the face. He sputtered a chuckle, scratching the thick neck a moment before standing to escape the sloppy embrace.

"What'd she do?" He asked as he joined Eli in the kitchen, searching for a washrag or paper towel to help wash off the saliva.

"A stupid thing," Eli retorted, as she procured the nearest clean glass on her counter, "Because she's the most retarded being I know and if I catch her trying to fix an exhaust in her underwear again, I'm going to shoot her myself. We're allowed to do that now, if we think the person is insane and fear for ours and/or surrounding lives. Yes Roin, you're retarded."

The last bit was said with a tart look at the grinning idiot on her couch (and yet there she was, on her couch, being cared for by her willingly despite her sharp words), before Eli knocked back what was perhaps just a tad larger than the average suggested shot of spirits. She was rather more acquainted with the beverage than she liked to admit (and hardly dependent on it like some she knew in the Force, she liked to think stoically), though there was just enough in there that it forced her to scrunch her nose up against both the sharpness and the desire to cough...though for Jack at least, the sight of the blonde bunching up her nose in such a way could just as well be construed as one of those more involuntary responses to something she found...well, pleasurable.

It didn't quite put her in better spirits either (pun not intended), but the comfort of the vodka (and the presence of someone somewhat approaching steady, though she'd never admit it then or ever) made Eli just charitable enough to follow up on Jack's predicament, ignoring Roin for the moment in favour of procuring paper towels from the cupboard under the sink (four whole pieces ripped off; she could just hear Duo joking about the high life a Detective's salary could afford) and helpfully dabbing at bull dog slobber and what she imagined was a streak of something now smeared-- probably from his bike. Though how it had gotten onto his face, while wearing a helmet at that, Eli didn't know.

Of course, there was still Roin within full view, and despite part of her preferring otherwise, the other, very loud and familiar part of Eli pulled away from what could easily be construed as far too tender familiarity, pressing the toweling into Jack's hand instead before looking away to eyeball Roin with something not quite just weariness, but too inscrutable otherwise to really make a guess of what it was before it was gone.

"I'm going to have a quick shower, then I'm going to my room, Roin." And by room, the loft that was found at the top of those narrow stairs on the other side of the attic-like apartment, wall-less on all but one side save the Japanese bamboo screening that had been placed around the space that had been open. Her lamp glowed dimly through the screen, and by God, it made the space up there more inviting and tempting than it had ever looked.

"If you're not going to watch DVD's anymore, Roin, you can set up the PS4...just play it quietly so I can sleep at some point, please." Already stripping her shirt off even as she said that, was Eli, because frankly, who was there to care? The dogs? Certainly not the humans present -- the male of the trio had seen far, far more skin than a stripped off shirt revealed, and God only knew what Roin had seen in the years they'd been together in the military.

(Okay, so maybe it was half done because Jack was there. Not so much an attempt at seduction, though, as Eli-speak for "I need to briefly be appreciated for a moment", just without actually saying it. If that meant preening internally over being admired physically, then so damn be it.)

"Can you help her...maybe?" That was to Jack, obviously, though after a moment of contemplation that was perhaps more hopeful for the opposite (just this once) than she knew, Eli added quickly, "Only if you're sticking around, of course."
