Paradox Pass Sheets - Other 5108-8237

 • Name: Ash'lein
 • Birth date: Eighth Interval; 339; Turnover (the day before month 1, day 1)
 • Gender: Male
 • Rank: Weyrleader at Ista
 • Face Claim: Clint Eastwood (in Heartbreak Ridge)

Appearance
Ash'lein is not particularly handsome. He has a rather military air from his long turns serving as a dragonrider and as a Weyrleader, and is far more likely to be squinting suspiciously or frowning than smiling or, Faranth forfend, laughing. He bears a number of scars from his hard life: a burn across his right forehead, and a web of old scars on the left of his neck from a long-ago watch-wher attack. The lines of his face are deep, and those not used to his rather menacing appearance might find themselves avoiding him out of instinctual self-preservation.

Though getting on in years, Ash'lein is in excellent condition. Sagging skin or no, he is mostly muscle, though he's not near so wiry as he was as a younger man, having put on a modest amount of fat as he's aged. He has endurance to match his dragon's, and wouldn't show weakness to save his life.

Personality
Ash'lein is generally stern, stoic, and above all, a warrior. He is a good leader and a good teacher, with a head for numbers, tactics, and strategy. Though his preference is to be in the thick of things - training, flying sweeps, running drills and getting dirty - above all, Ash'lein knows his duty to the Weyr. He will never shortchange his work and will take issue with anyone he sees as shirking or evading their duty. His is an excellent scholar and enjoys digging through musty tomes, but only on topics which engage him. The life of an archivist will never be his.

It's not until Ash'lein can take off the Weyrleader role that he ever loosens up. He will always do his duty, but riding is what he loves. He looks forward to the day when he can fulfill his and Kigath's true purpose: to flame Thread and protect the people of Pern.

Opinions
Threadfall: Threadfall is certainly coming. The predictions are good, the history clear: long Intervals have happened before, and they are at the tail end of theirs. Though some may grumble, training as if Thread is upon them is de rigeur, and will continue to be so for as long as he can make it so.

Benden Weyr: If the strangers could be trusted, Ash'lein would be more than willing to cede half of Pern to them, let them deal with their troubles, run sweeps, train for Threadfall and wonder how to protect their land best. But the strangers run around tail tucked, and seem as incompetent as a lady with a sword. Ash'lein would die rather than leave land protected only by that lot.

Female fighters: It's unnatural, and wrong. Certainly it is a cruelty to the men who have to fight alongside them, and damaging to the feminine nature. But, that said - Thread is coming, and dragons are too few. Ash'lein is willing to work alongside those who have (wrongly) forced aside their natural inclinations, but you can't make him like it.

History
Early childhood: Igen Hold lands
339: Between the turns of 338 and 339, on the night of the second day of Turnover, Eleinne gave birth to her third child and first son, a boy she named Ellan. When her husband returned from outriding, he ignored her wishes and renamed the boy Ashvellein, gruffly announcing that no son of his would ever be saddled with such a prissy girl's name. Ashvellein was a quick study at being human, and learned to sit up and crawl in short order. His first word was "no."

340: Precocious and intelligent, Ashvellein is a favorite of the local women. Eleinne gets pregnant again, with her fourth.

341: When Eleinne's fourth child is born, it is clear by the black hair of the boy that the father is not her husband. Vash is furious, and denounces her publically. He claims Ashvellein and the two girls as his rightful offspring, but will have nothing to do with the fourth. Eleinne flees in the night with her bastard son rather than face her husband's continuing wrath. Ashvellein is fostered to Igen Hold and raised in the creche.

342: Late in the turn, Vash returns to Igen Hold. His father's gift to him is a well-trained hound; his gift to his eldest daughter, an arranged engagement with the son of one of his friends.

343: At four, Ashvellein begins to learn his letters and sums under the Hold Harper. He does well and is soon studying with students older than he.

344: Vash breaks his leg in a riding accident and is stationed at Igen Hold to heal. Though he spends some time with his children - particularly his son Ashvellein - he is not much of a father, and spends more time gruffly instructing than playing.

345: After nearly a year of Hold duty, Vash returns to outriding. Ashvellein extracts a promise that he will be allowed to ride with him soon. In return, Vash demands that his son get formal training at the Beastcraft Hall.

346: Lainna is married as soon as she gets her first blood, at the tender age of 13. Ashvellein attends the wedding, but is soon sent to the Beastcraft Hall in Keroon to learn the tending and riding of runners.

347: As a specialized apprentice, Ashvellein is kept quite busy. To his unhappiness, he (a small eight-turn-old boy!) is not allowed to ride for fear of his safety. Deciding to prove his masters wrong, Ashvellein throws himself into the work with single-minded determination.

348: Still too short to ride the adult runners, Ashvellein volunteers as a "rider" for the yearlings. He is accepted, and though he gets to do exactly zero true riding, he rapidly learns how to keep his balance on frisky, sprightly, and all-too-easily spooked mounts.

349: Finally starting to get a little height - and having mastered many of the chores associated with tending runners - Ashvellein's masters allow him to begin training in riding. He is a natural, his excellent balance and natural firmness and preciseness of character combining to make a technically excellent rider.

350: In the spring, Ashvellein returns to Igen Hold on runner-back, traveling with a trading caravan. His father seems pleased with his progress, and promises to put in a word with the outriders for Ashvellein to receive the training. In the meantime, Ashvellein works in the Hold stables.

A bronze youth: Ista Weyr
351: When gold Nadeluth Rises, everyone knows it is only a matter of time before Searchriders come. When a blue dragon and his rider finger out Ashvellein, he almost refuses to go. However, his father knew the duty of the Hold to the Weyr - and despite seeing dragons as useless relics, respects the danger of those talons and teeth. His son goes with the blue to the Weyr. At the Hatching, Ashvellein Impresses bronze Kigath, sired by brown Uskuth on gold Nadeluth. He is the only bronze. Ashvellein chooses the elision Ash'lein.

352: Though brown Clutches are hardly unheard-of, Ash'lein feels that he and Kigath must prove themselves as a brown-sired bronzepair. His turns of experience with runners pay off; when he and Kigath finally take flight, it is as if they are one beast.

353: For the first time, Kigath takes Chase, after a green dragon. Ash'lein is totally overwhelmed by the experience, particularly as he is a virgin. Though Kigath does not win the Flight, Ash'lein ends up tangled with one of the Flightmoths. Nine months later, his daughter is born - a girl the mother names Eisna. Ash'lein makes a few motions of fatherhood, but soon stops.

354: Though Wing training and duties keep him relatively busy, Ash'lein begins to take the time to study in the Archives, as reading is a pleasant passtime for him.

355: Over the course of the turn, as a personal project, Ash'lein researches the historical uses of bronzes, ranging from Threadfall through diplomatic missions. By Turnover, he completes a treatise on the topic, and (on a bit of a whim), sends a copy to the Harper Hall as well as leaving a copy in the Weyr Archives.

356: Ash'lein is selected for mentoring by his Wingsecond, with the eventual possibility of leadership himself.

Weyrleader: Ista Weyr
357: Kigath Catches his dam Nadeluth, making Ash'lein Weyrleader. He is only 18. Determined not to screw anything up, Ash'lein often defers to the former Weyrleader, though at times he disagrees. To his surprise, Reth's rider gives him the courtesy of obedience, and the Weyr follows.

358: Late in the year, Ash'lein gets a note that his mother is dying. By the time he finds time to do his duty and go to her, she has died. He visits her grave, but can find little sorrow, only a touch of melancholy for a mother lost to him by her own evildoing.

359: As time rolls by, Ash'lein and Kigath grow more accustomed to their leadership role. They continue to train with their Wing, often the butt of friendly jokes about the strange dichotomy of being subordinate to someone they are directly in charge of.

360: During Turnover, Ash'lein gets well and truly drunk. The evening ends with him in the bed of a pair of greenriders. He wakes in the morning with a horrific hangover and unfortunately precise memories of the night, and can't escape fast enough. To his shame, his fantasies are filled by those memories.

361: Though the Weyr is rather open about men who like other men, childhood training dies hard. But a sex drive, once awoken, is a powerful thing - and Ash'lein has several trysts with greenriders. Kigath is fully supported, but Ash'lein can't help but feel that he's doing something terribly wrong.

362: Kigath repeats what many believed was a fluke, Catching Nadeluth. This Clutch is larger, at 19. By agreement of the Wingleaders and the suggestion of Reth's rider, Ash'lein and Kigath are assigned a Wing to lead, skipping the stage of Wingsecond.

363: For the first time, Ash'lein returns to visit his father. Though a visit of a few days is hardly enough time to catch up on a decade of separation, the two men make the best of it. Despite his dislike of dragonriders, Vash is proud of his son's accomplishments. That is, until Ash'lein lets it slip that he has been sleeping with men. The chasm this knowledge creates between the two will never be bridged.

364: Ash'lein's sister Lainna dies in childbirth. He receives a letter months later, and again makes his dutiful visit to the grave. Her memory is a pale ghost, but her two living children are quite lovely and Ash'lein gives both dragon rides during his brief visit.

365: Early in the turn, Vash dies. Ash'lein does not return for the funeral, nor to visit the grave. The bitter words still hang between him and the memory of his father, and in retaliation he starts a relationship with one of the lower caverns women. Some months into the relationship, she becomes pregnant and refuses his continued advances.

366: Ash'lein's former lover has a son, Shavym, but asks that the Weyrleader not be involved with the boy. This is no trial for him.

367: Itching fingers drive Ash'lein to begin writing more than a journal. This time he begins a review of Threadfall formations and Wing drills. Given the duties of both a Weyrleader and Wingleader, the research is quite slow.

368: Once again, Kigath Catches Nadeluth, siring a Clutch of a full 22, the largest in recent memory. Ash'lein runs across records of Gather Games, and adds a chapter to his review. He becomes fast friends with the Archivist, a harper-trained man named Sanres, ten years his senior.

369: Late-hours research with Sanres start to become... more than friendly. At 30, Ash'lein finally sets foot into the world of romance. Though the relationship is discreet, given Ash'lein's position, it doesn't take long for it to be a poorly-kept secret.

370: Though Nadeluth and Kigath have adjoining weyrs, and Sanres official rooms in the Archives, the two men move in together late in the turn. Some teasing from Nadeluth's rider is the worst things seem to get.

371: Ash'lein finally finishes his review, and is quite pleased with himself. Predictions place the return of the Red Star within his lifespan, and though the whole Weyr might not agree, Ash'lein is a believer. He suggests a number of old drills and formations be revived, and with his Wing, tries his hand at creating a few new ones himself.

372: Ista Hold shortchanges the Weyr on their tithe. It takes quite a bit of diplomacy to convince them to give the Weyr their full due. As a good-will venture - and to train dragons in endurance flights and repetitive betweening - Ista Weyr begins to offer the service of dragons as transportation for holders and precious cargo more often.

373: Nadeluth returns to her former mate, Reth, siring a Clutch of 27. Ash'lein retains control of his Wing, and shows Reth's rider the same courtesy of obedience that he was shown so many Turns past. Part of him feels guilty - that perhaps his attachment to Sanres affected Kigath's pursuit of Nadeluth.

374: Ash'lein's son Vanneleil is born, to a Flightmoth from Naduleth's last Flight. She promptly sticks the boy in the creche, but some fatherly impulse prods him to at least follow the boy's progress and visit once in a while.

375: On a routine visit to the wher kennels to discuss watch schedules, one of the watch-whers manages to break its lead, attacking Ash'lein and seriously wounding him - tearing flesh off of his neck and left arm, and leaving deep gashes in his side and thigh. It is a miracle that he survives.

376: Small squabbles with Sanres while slowly regaining strength and mobility lead to a rather public falling-out. Though the two reconcile, they slowly drift apart.

377: In a repeat performance, Reth again Catches Nadeluth. The Clutch is 26. Ash'lein tries to find his two other children, to no avail. Both have apparently been fostered outside the Weyr.

378: Ash'lein encourages Kigath to try his wings at greens more often. The bronze obliges now and again, but loses as many as he wins - being a powerhouse rather than capable of much agility. Sanres doesn't seem to care.

379: Ash'lein and Sanres finally call an end to their relationship, remaining distant friends, but no longer lovers or confidants.

380: For the first time, Kigath and Ash'lein win a title at the Turnover Games, claiming the title of highest altitude achieved in vertical ascent. Several of Ash'lein's Wing also do well, and a few of his more outre training methods for his Wing start to pop up in other drills. Amazing what a little showmanship can do!

381: Kigath Catches Nadeluth, siring a Clutch of 28 - five of them bronze. Ash'lein and Reth's rider work closely together to instigate multi-Wing drills.

382: A series of harsh winter storms is the excuse for Igen Hold shorting the Weyr in their tithe. Diplomatic missions are unsuccessful; the Weyr is forced to choose between violence or increased hunting. Though hotheads are all for a show of force, Nadeluth's rider manages to work her charm and get small tithes from a number of the more prosperous Holds across Pern, in return for official sweeps and a little attention. Ash'lein's respect for the woman, already high, edges up another notch.

383: Ash'lein fosters Vanneleil out to a family friend with the Igen outriders, intending that his son gain experience riding and scouting (and even guarding caravans) before Standing for a Clutch. For the first time, he visits his father's grave, but the loss is so old he feels only wistfulness.

384: Suspiciously poor tithes trickle in - late, short, and low quality. It takes more than sweet words to show the Holds the errors of their ways. However, the holdfolk grudgingly begin to see the dragonriders as worth their keep when heavy rains after a long drought cause widespread flooding and landslides, with dragonriders heroically saving many and helping aid in transport of emergency supplies.

385: Again, Kigath Catches Nadeluth. In the Clutch of 29, there is a golden egg, but before long it becomes apparent that something is wrong - Nadeluth barely guards the egg, and refuses to speak of it. Despite the hopes of the Weyr, the gold egg does not Hatch, the dragon within either deformed or dead.

386: More accurate estimations of the Red Star's path and projected return are made. Despite the long Interval, Ash'lein is determined that the Weyr be prepared and will brook no argument. After all, historical records of long Intervals exist; claiming that Thread has gone away is the argument of a moonstruck child.

387: After long discussion, Ash'lein officially instigates increased attendance of dragonriders to Hold and Hall Gathers, to remind Pern of who they are. In addition, riders travel to each of the abandoned Weyrs, mainly in search of archival material left behind long ago, particularly Threadfall maps and Fall diagrams.

388: Vanneleil returns to the Weyr by way of Searchdragon, much to Ash'lein's amusement. The boy, now 14, is wiry and dark from working with the outriders. He becomes something of a shadow to all the Wingleaders and Wingseconds, constantly looking for more information - like father, like son.

389: Reth once again Catches Nadeluth. It is his turn to sire a golden daughter - yet unlike Kigath's daughter, she survives and Impresses to Livna, declaring herself gold Tuelarenth. Ash'lein can't shake a feeling of shame, though Kigath rejoices with the Weyr. Ash'lein's once comfort is seeing his son, Vanneleil, Impress to blue Neith, becoming V'leil.

390: Ash'lein - with a bit more free time now that he's no longer working with a Weyrleader's load - spends a great deal of time studying tactics and strategy of Threadfall, having had enough of politics for the time being. He offers a weekly lecture/discussion dissecting historical Falls, which becomes a surprising hit with the weyrlings, and a few of the older riders.

391: During Summer Solstice Games, Kigath is fouled by a young dragon hopping between too closely to him and panicking. The resulting injuries keep him grounded for months and leave spectacular scars.

392: Though not particularly enamored of Lady "Queen Bee" Livna, Ash'lein finds that his occasional interactions with her are interesting, if nothing less. Though she is young and inexperienced, he gives her the grave attention and respect with which he had the honor of receiving so many turns ago.

393: Ash'lein briefly takes up with a caravaner traveling with a tithe train - a fourty-odd year old woman as tough as nails, who still managed to move with the elegance and grace of any Hold's Lady. The affair is short and torrid, and leads to much teasing from much more laid-back Kigath.

The new queen: Ista Weyr
394: Age and cunning win out over youth and vigor - for in Tuelarenth's maiden Flight, Kigath prevails, siring a Clutch of 29. The large Clutch on such a young gold is seen as yet another sign of impending Thread by many.

395: Ash'lein again offers his evening dissections of Threadfall. As before, there is decent attendance. Though some might see it as beneath the Weyrleader to teach, Ash'lein enjoys the discussions and sees them as a good way to keep himself on his toes.

396: Knowing that the more iterations a plan has to be refined, the better it ought to become, Ash'lein starts working in earnest with his Wingleaders to determine Threadfall rotations, taking into account different casualty and mortality predictions. The same problem keeps rearing its ugly head: Too damned much Pern, and too few dragons.

397: Sanres dies in his sleep, leaving the Archives in the capable hands of his two assistants. Ash'lein mourns privately, in public remaining the same stoic warrior. Meetings discussing Threadfall routinely end in snarls and headaches, and Ash'lein temporarily puts them on hold, ramping up multi-Wing drills and beginning an extensive review of both historical and predictive Threadfall charts.

398: As First Fall creeps closer and closer, the Wings continue to modify drills and debate Fall rotations. It's a generally uneventful turn, save for a heavy windstorm that creates a flurry of deadfall harvesting.

Strangers to the northeast: Ista Weyr
399: Though Ash'lein is privately worried that Pern's only gold doesn't seem inclined to Rise again any time soon, he keeps his worries to himself. Domestic affairs are Livna's purview, and he sees no reason to trespass there. The appearance of strange dragonriders over Ista Weyr is shocking - their decision to turn into grumpy recluses in the abandoned husk of Benden Weyr, frustrating. Not to mention the perversion of nature, with women riding fighting dragons. But Fall will be a dark time, and Pern will need every dragon...

Dragon: Bronze Kigath
Name: Kigath
Color: bronze
Clutch: Out of gold Nadeluth by brown Uskuth, 8I-351-08-20

Appearance
Kigath is a handsome mossy bronze. His dark coloration is fairly uniform, with only a near-black spine-long stripe for a distinctive marking. His talons are black, and, through some quirk of genetics, so are his fangs and molars. In form, Kigath is at the long end of the bronze range, but not overly so; it is his unusually long and broad wings which give him much of the endurance he is known for.

Length: 66 feet
...Head: 7 feet
...Neck: 9.5 feet
...Body: 18.5 feet
...Tail: 31 feet
Wingspan: 142 feet

Personality
Kigath is a very laid back dragon. Emotionally, he does not react quickly, nor does he need a lot of input from his rider. In general, he is very self-sufficient, betraying little of the arrogance or neediness his kind are infamous for. Ash'lein has always attributed this to Kigath's brown sire, but the dragon sees no reason to take issue with this. In general, Kigath is relatively friendly, happy to give compliments where they are enjoyed and with a rather broad sense of humor. However, this ease should not be mistaken for weakness of character: Kigath is a leader to his bones, and will not allow disrespect nor disobedience. When provoked or when in drills or Falls, he is accurate, quick, and insightful. According to Ash'lein, his greatest fault is his fondness for poetic verse, most of it terrible.
